Siberian Research Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineral Resources (SNIIGGiMS) was established in 1957 by the Order of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources Protection of the USSR to extend scientific research in Siberia in the field of geology and mineral resources. According to the Order of the Minister and the institute regulations SNIIGGiMS was entrusted with scientific research works implementation on the territory of Krasnoyarsky Kray, Altaisky Kray, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Kemerovo, Tjumen and Irkutsk Regions, Yakutiya and Tuva, Cverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk Regions within the limits of the West Siberian Lowland. At the present time SNIIGGiMS is the biggest complex institute, which carries out geological investigations on the territory of Siberia on methodological and economic justification of the effective directions of exploration for oil and gas, ferrous, nonferrous and noble metal ores, coal and turf, geoecological and hydrogeological studies, technical and methodological backup of the main types of geological investigations. There are 680 employees, including 25 Doctors and 80 Candidates of Science. There is one Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and six Correspondent Members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences among them.
There are a postgraduate study and a geologic specialization Candidate's dissertations defence specialized counsil in the institute. Almost all protectable research area of the institute comes to an end with making of inventions. The institute has an informational and a publishing base.
Today there are important problems to be solved by the employees of the institute:
  • scientific explanation of general directions of geological study of Siberia, minerals and raw materials sources expansion of its regions, which include 18 regions of the Russian Federation;
  • serologic and economic evaluation of reserves of mineral deposits and predicted recourses of prospective regions;
  • development of innovation techniques and import substituting technical means for minerals survey.
